Emotional Processing: Practices to Release and Renew

Writer's picture: Keisha JordanKeisha Jordan

We all carry emotional baggage. It's like this invisible weight that sometimes feels impossible to shake. But here's the deal: we don't have to let our emotions run our lives. Rituals for emotional releasing can help you release that weight and renew your spirit. These practices aren't about never feeling again, but about feeling your emotions and processing them vs ignoring them.

Why Emotional Processing Matters

Emotional processing is crucial because it impacts every aspect of our lives. When we avoid our emotions, they don't just disappear; they get buried and manifest in unhealthy ways. I remember a time when I was so avoidant of my emotions that i was carrying so much emotional weight and felt like I was moving through molasses every day. It wasn't until I started incorporating rituals & practices into my life to help me process my emotions that I began to feel lighter, more free. Emotional processing isn't just about feeling better; it's about reclaiming your life and living it fully.

Let's dive into some simple yet powerful rituals to support your emotional processing and releasing.

Simple Rituals/Practices for Emotional Processing

1. Journaling

Journaling is a powerful tool for self-discovery and emotional release. It allows you to process your thoughts and feelings in a safe, private space. A space where it's just you, your journal and your thoughts/feelings.

Writing things down helps you make sense of your emotions and can be incredibly cathartic. Think of journaling as a personal, deep dive conversation with yourself. It's a powerful way to really sift through your feelings, get a better understanding of your motivations, and track your progress over time.

When you write, you engage in a dialogue with your inner self, which can lead to profound insights and healing. Whether you're pouring out your heart or just jotting down a few thoughts, journaling is a space where you can be completely honest and unfiltered. It's your sanctuary.

How to Start: Grab a notebook and a pen. Find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted. If you're like me and music is a big help for you, I suggest making a journaling playlist. Here are some of my favorite tracks to write to:

And if you'd like the whole playlist here you go:

Prompts for Emotional Release:

If you can't seem to get started on your own just yet (no fear that's totally okay and normal), you can always start with prompts. Here are some suggestions to give you a jumping off point:

"What am I feeling right now?"

"What do I need to let go of?"

"What do I need to say but I feel like I can't?"

"What feelings am I avoiding right now?"

The key is to NOT censor yourself. This can feel really difficult at first because we are so used to minimizing our emotions for the comfort of others. I invite you to make this a sacred practice where you allow yourself to let your emotions flow onto the pages. If you're afraid someone might find what you've written, I high suggest disposing of the pages or if possible locking your journal away. There are also journaling apps that allow you to set up a password lock so no one but you can get in. Digital journaling is just as effective!

Pro-Tips:

  • Allow yourself to write continuously for the duration of 3 songs, or set a timer to 10 minutes. This allows your subconscious to come online and really lets you bring up things needing to be released.

  • If you're not a writer, try voice journaling! Not only is this convenient to do on your phone, but using your voice to actually speak the feelings is a somatic release and wonderful way to move the energy out of your body.

  • Finally, embrace all feelings, rage included. Rage journaling is one of my favorite practices and has really helped me heal my relationship to my sacred rage.

2. Breathwork

Breathwork is a simple yet profound way to calm the nervous system and center yourself. By focusing on your breath, you can release tension and stress, creating space for emotional healing.

Our breath is our life force, and yet, we often don't give it the attention it deserves. When we're stressed or anxious, our breathing becomes shallow and rapid. Breathwork techniques help us to consciously control our breath, which in turn helps to calm our mind and body. It's about finding a rhythm that soothes you, allowing you to tap into a state of relaxation and clarity. Breathwork can be done anywhere, anytime, making it a versatile tool for managing stress and emotions.

3. Movement and Dance

Somatic practices, like dance, are incredible ways to release stored emotions. Our bodies can hold so much of our experiences. They can help us heal things that the mind just can't.

When we move our bodies, we can shake off the weight of emotional pain and feel more alive and free.

It allows us to release pent-up energy and emotions through our bodies. Dance, in particular, is a celebration of the self. It’s not about performing for others; it’s about moving in a way that feels good to you. Whether it’s a slow, meditative movement or an energetic dance, let your body guide you to where it needs to go. It knows what you need.

Simple Dance or Movement Practices: Put on your favorite music and let your body move. Don't worry about looking a certain way. Just move how you feel.

4. EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Techniques)

EFT Tapping is a powerful method that combines elements of acupuncture and psychology. By tapping on specific meridian points on your body, you can release emotional blockages and bring about a sense of calm and clarity. Tapping is like acupuncture without the needles. It’s a way to physically interact with your body's energy system to reduce stress and emotional discomfort. When you tap on these points while focusing on a specific emotion or issue, you can help to release the negative energy associated with it. This practice is both soothing and empowering, giving you a tangible way to address and manage your emotions.

How EFT Tapping Works:

EFT Tapping is a therapy technique that is based on the Ancient Chinese techniques of acupuncture and acupressure. It uses the meridian lines in the body to eliminate physical, emotional and mental issues. EFT involves tapping on these meridian points on the body while focusing on a specific issue or emotion.

Nature has an incredible ability to heal. Being outdoors and connecting with the natural world can help ground you, lift your spirits, and provide a sense of peace and renewal. Nature is a powerful healer that offers a unique sense of peace and tranquility.

When we're surrounded by natural beauty, we can feel a profound sense of connection and grounding. The sights, sounds, and smells of nature have a calming effect on our nervous system, helping us to release stress and tension.

Whether it's a walk in the park, sitting by a tree, or simply breathing in fresh air, spending time in nature can rejuvenate your spirit and provide clarity.

Rituals for Connecting with Nature:

Take a walk in the park, sit by a tree, or simply open your window and breathe in the fresh air. Ground yourself by standing barefoot on the earth.

Creating Your Own Healing Ritual

Your healing rituals should resonate with YOU. Personalize them to fit your needs and preferences. Maybe you combine journaling with a walk in nature, or you start your day with breathwork and end it with meditation. The key is to make these practices your own.
