I would be full of it if I sat here and tried to tell you that the self-expression work means you'll NEVER feel fear when you're speaking up or sharing your truth.

The truth is Fear is a natural companion when you're sharing vulnerably or sharing ideals and beliefs that go against the grain. What I've learned on my journey and also as a guide for others is that fear is often a signal that we are doing something that will invite us to expand. Something that will help take us to the next level, and that always feels a little scary.

Have you felt fear when it comes to using your voice and being authentically self-expressed?

  • Yes for sure!

  • Nope, I'm fearless!

Embracing Fear: Tools for the Journey

Having practices to help ease the fear is a crucial piece of the journey. Imagine these practices as your guide, helping you find your way when things get tough. Whether it's taking deep breaths, saying empowering phrases out loud or picturing your success, these practices are your toolkit, ready to make you feel more grounded and less scared. They don't just help you handle fear in the moment; they're like magic tricks that turn fear into courage, confusion into clarity, and doubt into a strong, confident voice. They're your secret weapons in the adventure of being authentically you.

1: Breathe Deeply: Inhale Courage, Exhale Fear

Breathing exercises have been a staple in my practices. Powerfully helping me move stuck emotions, ground and return back to my body. Try this breathing practice to help with fear:

  • Inhale: while internally saying, “ Inhale courage.” (4 counts)

  • Hold: for 4 counts

  • Exhale: while internally saying, “Exhale fear.” (8 counts)

Repeat at least 5 times, grounding yourself in the present moment.

2: Empowerment Phrases: Say It Out Loud

If you ask anyone who has worked with me, they can tell you how I am obsessed with using our voices to move energy, empower and diffuse difficult feelings. I use this myself a lot with fear!

Our voice is a potent tool for moving energy and empowering ourselves. When fear looms, use these empowerment phrases aloud:

“My voice matters!”

“My voice breaks chains!”

"I release fear; I embrace freedom!”

Feel the resonance of these words within you, shifting the energy around fear.

If you want to take it a step further, look at yourself in a mirror while you repeat the phrases. You also don't have to use these exact phrases. If there's something else that speaks to you, use that instead so it feels more aligned and powerful.

3: Visualize Success: See It First

Fear often clouds the vision of success. Take a moment to visualize the impact your words can have, the connections they can forge, and the positive change they can spark. This visualization becomes a powerful motivator before making a post, going live, or recording a video.

Find yourself a quite space. Close your eyes or lower your gaze.

Begin to sense the future, and ask yourself: What positive impact have you created? What do I see, hear, feel, smell and sense in this moment where I've successfully used my voice and authentic expression?

4: Connect With Your Self-Expression Why: Anchor Into Purpose

Fear dissipates when purpose takes center stage. Regularly reconnect with your 'why.' Ask yourself:

Who could benefit from me speaking up? How?

Reflect on the potential ripple effect of your words. Consider who might be positively affected by your message and how your voice could spark meaningful change. Envision the chain reaction that starts with your courage to speak up.

How does my voice align with my vision for change?

Dive into your core values and beliefs. Ask yourself how your voice serves as a vessel for these principles. Connecting your words to your fundamental values strengthens your conviction and provides a clear understanding of why your voice matters.

Who benefits when I speak up, and how?

Identify specific individuals or communities that could benefit from your authentic expression. Delve into the ways your voice might offer support, encouragement, or insight. Understanding the direct impact of your words fuels a deeper sense of purpose when speaking up.

Remember: Start Small, Embrace Imperfection

Allow yourself to start small on this journey. Expressing a simple idea, sharing a thought, or voicing a feeling are courageous acts that build a foundation for bolder expressions.

Perfection is the enemy of authenticity; embrace imperfection as a sign that you're being true to yourself.

In the realm of authentic self-expression, fear isn't a barrier; it's a guide, signaling the path of growth and transformation. Embrace it, breathe through it, and let your voice echo with the courage that lies within.
